A Mechanicville man was charged Tuesday with causing $2,000 worth of damage to doors and equipment at the Stillwater Area Community Center earlier this month.

Town police said Thomas Brewer, 25, entered the community center while it was open on Feb. 2 and damaged an elevator, an electrical box and an alarm bell and removed a metal panel on a water fountain. He also broke into a room where karate instructions are held, police said.

Police found Brewer because the community center has a 16-camera security system that recorded most of his actions.

Sgt. Ray Cordani would not comment on a possible motive.

“I don’t know if this was a game, I don’t know if this was illness, I don’t know if this was a vendetta,” he said. “Why did he do it? I don’t know.”

Paul Lilac, executive director of the community center, said some repairs have already been completed.

“Very strange, very bizarre,” Lilac said.

Brewer was charged with felony counts of third-degree burglary and second-degree criminal mischief and was sent to the Saratoga County jail on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.
