Saratoga Springs boys, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake girls capture team titles in the Section II Alpine

Team titles went to the Saratoga Springs boys and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake girls at the Section II Alpine Skiing Championships Tuesday at Gore Mountain.

A well-balanced Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake girls’ squad won the morning giant slalom, but then had to hold off Queensbury, which finished first in the afternoon slalom. After the morning session, Burnt Hills was leading with 35 points, followed by Queensbury with 50 and Shenendehowa with 60. Queensbury won the slalom with a score of 45, to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake’s 52 and Shenendehowa’s 62. Team totals added up to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake with 87, Queensbury with 95 and Shenendehowa with 122.

Before the racing started, Paul Dreyer, Saratoga’s top boy in Alpine, said his squad needed a strong showing in slalom to take the title.

“We don’t have the weight to go as fast as some of the other teams in the flats,” he said, referring to the longer giant slalom courses.

He was right.

The Blue Streaks had to overcome a rough giant slalom result to overtake rivals Shenendehowa and Albany Academy. The Plainsmen were first after the morning race with 47 points, followed by Albany Academy with 50 and Saratoga with 52. Led by Dreyer and his twin brother Will, the Streaks picked up steam in the slalom to win the discipline with a score of 23. Shenendehowa was next in

slalom with 65, to edge Albany Academy by one point.

When the two race results were totaled, the final score was Saratoga with 75, Shenendehowa with 112 and Albany Academy with 116.

Paul Dreyer was a double winner for Saratoga, winning the giant

slalom by a wide 1.63-second margin and the slalom by a narrower .15 seconds.
