Paris helps Amsterdam take wrestling title

A year ago, John Paris could only watch his Amsterdam teammates while they finished fourth at the Section II, Class B tournament, as a knee injury cost him his entire sophomore season.

If there was any doubt Paris was fully back, he dispelled it by hammering his way to the 160-pound title Saturday night, helping the Rams to their first class championship since 1984.

“This really means a lot to me,” said Paris, moments after he decisioned Jimmy Neal of Glens Falls, 9-3, in the finals. “I won this tournament as a freshman,. It hurt to not to be able to compete last season.”

Paris has surgery to repair tears of both major ligaments in his right knee. He was able to begin wrestling again in the offseason, and has put together a 42-3 season as heads into this weekend’s state qualifier.

A win at the Eastern States Classic last month gave Paris confidence that was back.

“That was very important. I knew that everything, physically, was OK,” he said. “I really wanted to make sure I was ready for this tournament, because it was going to be on my home mats.”

Paris barely gave the home fans time to watch him get to the finals, racking up pins in 30 seconds and 32 seconds to get to the final.

“I wanted to go out and wrestle my match,” said Paris, who used a pair of python-like tilts to take contral of Neal in the third period. “It also helped that we were having a good final round as a team.”

Paris’ title followed championship round wins by 11th-grader Rick DuFresne at 119, seniors Brian Benton (130) and Rob Morey (152), and sophomore Giuseppi Lanzi at 135.

Benton picked up his fifth consecutive Class B championship, ran his season record to 46-2 and pushed his varsity win total to 246 as he passed previous Section II all-time win leader Matt Herrington’s mark of 243.

“It’s a great accomplishment, and I’m very happy about winning five,” said Benton, who has committed to George Mason University. “But I’m even more happy that my workout partner (Lanzi) won.

“We push each other very hard every day. It’s been like that since were in elementary school, when we were in the Premiere Club program.”

Lanzi had been third the past two years at this stage, after getting to the finals as a seventh-grader.

He also pinned into the final (Amsterdam had nine finalists), then beat Kyle Vuillaume of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, 10-2.

“He beat me twice last year,” said Lanzi of Vuillaume. “That made me work a lot harder during the offseason.”

Lanzi has turned the personal rivalry around, having also gotten the best of Vuillaume at the North/South Duals and the Big 10 Tournament. Like most of his teammates, Lanzi had been pointing at this tournament.

“Almost the entire team has been together since we began wrestling back in first, second grade,” said Lanzi. “We knew we would have a special team this year.”

Senior Paul Martin got Burnt Hills a win in the finals, beating the Rams’ Jestin Seays, 9-3, at 145.

“He beat me during the year, but I went back and watched the tape over and over,” said Martin. “He’s got a good double-leg [takedown], but I wasn’t going to let him use it this time,” said Martin, who became a two-time “B” champ.

Amsterdam’s Dan Palmerino beat Scotia-Glenville’s Dan Riggi, 6-3, in the 125 final, stopping the Tartan junior’s bid for three straight Class B titles.

Dan McNamara gave the Rams another title with his win at 171, Amsterdam finished with 246 points. Burnt Hillswas second with 224.
