Almost 500 state workers will have to part with their parking spots near the Empire State Plaza this spring as the state Office of General Services shuts down a garage for a year-long renovation project.
OGS announced today a $4.9 million rehabilitation project for its garage near the intersection of Swan Street and Madison Avenue. The state agency is preparing to relocate 476 permit holders at the facility to other garages or lots as a Mansfield, Mass., contractor rehabs the garage’s flooring, structural supports, loading dock and Swan Street roadway.
“We’re going to have to relocate them temporarily. That’s the best way to accomplish this work,” OGS spokesman Brad Maione said.
The Swan Street project differs from the rehabilitation work OGS recently completed at a garage in the plaza, which was conducted in phases. But Maione said OGS will be able to place all of the affected commuters, who work for several state agencies, including the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Maione said alternative parking locations include the lot at 100 Broadway, the East Parking Garage and the Sheridan Hollow Garage. Those locations are on the side of the plaza opposite the Swan Street garage.
