Classes were cancelled at Mechanicville Elementary School early this morning after oil in an elevator motor overheated and caused an odor throughout the building.
Superintendent of Schools Michael McCarthy said an alarm went off about 5:15 a.m. when the malfunctioning motor caused the odor and smoke to spread through the building.
McCarthy and elementary school principal Stephen Marra decided to close the school for the day about 30 minutes later.
A green Servpro truck sat outside the school this afternoon as officials worked to ventilate the air inside so students could return to school Thursday.
“We’ve made good progress,” McCarthy said. “We expect to be open tomorrow.”
McCarthy said the school won’t know the cause of the malfunction until the motor and elevator are repaired within the next few weeks.
