A major water bottling company – owner of 15 brands including Poland Spring, Perrier and Deer Park – will drill a test well on the city’s watershed as it searches for a new water source.
The Johnstown Common Council voted Monday to give Nestle Waters North America access to watershed property to drill a well.
Mayor Sarah J. Slingerland said the company will test for quality and volume. She said she expects drilling to begin in the near future.
Lisa McCoy, marketing director of the Fulton County Economic Development Corp., said Nestle has completed tests in Canajoharie and is testing at a number of sites around the nation, including Ephratah. The water must have a spring as its source, she said.
The Common Council approval followed earlier approval by the Johnstown Water Board.
McCoy said Nestle is planning on building near its chosen water source and would employ 50 to 300 people, depending on water volume.
A telephone call to Nestle this morning was not immediately returned.
