The Common Council’s sidewalk committee will recommend tonight that the council commit to replacing sidewalks for the 12 property owners chosen last fall and for another 12 to be selected May 13.

Work on last fall’s roster may begin sometime after April 1. Those applying by May 1 and selected May 13 would have their sidewalks replaced in the fall if the proposal is adopted tonight.

With a $75,000 state Department of Transportation grant secured for the project, the city is providing the service at a cost of $1 per square foot. Last fall, before the grant was available, the cost was $1.75. City officials have said those who paid in advance will receive refunds.

The sidewalk committee, consisting of council members Matthew Myers, R-5th Ward, James Robinson, R-3rd Ward, and Robin Wentworth, Ind.-1st Ward, met last week to formulate new eligibility criteria.

While the program will still seek to choose two entrants per ward, one senior citizen (age 62 or over) would be given preference in each ward. Winners are chosen through a drawing.

There would be an income ceiling of $65,000 and the property must be owner-occupied and either a one-family or two-family residence. Property taxes must be paid.

Past applicants must submit new applications to be eligible for the new group chosen on May 13.

Mayor Tim Hughes said Monday he will suggest the council consider using the grant money to hire private contractors to perform the work.

He said the city’s Department of Public Works crew may have difficulty fitting the sidewalk replacement project in its schedule.

The council will meet at 6 tonight in City Hall.
