City police were asking for assistance Wednesday to find the killer of a city man.

Anthony M. Brown, 27, was shot once in the lower back Tuesday evening in an alley next to 816 Bridge St. He was unconscious when paramedics arrived and was treated at the scene but died later at Albany Medical Center.

Police only had a vague description of the suspect — a black male, 5 feet, 7 inches tall, with a thin build. The man was last seen running west on Lansing Street and wearing all dark clothing.

“There were several people in the area at the time, from what we understand,” police spokesman officer Kevin Green said. “We’re looking for help.”

Anyone with information was asked to call the Schenectady Police Department at 382-5263.

The incident happened just after 6 p.m. Tuesday. A neighbor called police reporting screaming and gunshots. Shell casings were found in the street.

On scene, evidence technicians marked the casings and other possible evidence.

Brown had some run-ins with the law in the past, but apparently nothing recently, records show.

In 2005, he was accused of running from a traffic stop on Eastern Avenue. He got away, but not before dropping a plastic bag with 33 grams of marijuana while jumping a fence, according to papers filed in court.

Brown was later arrested and pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and possession of marijuana. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail.

Brown was also convicted of felony criminal possession of marijuana in 2004, records show. He was sentenced to one to three years in state prison, but served time in a shock incarceration program.

The killing follows a series of shootings in the city, including one on March 30 just down the street from Tuesday’s, at Bridge Street and Francis Avenue. That shooting injured two. Another shooting Wednesday took place near the Stockade area off Erie Boulevard.
