The county is under a state of emergency and has banned outdoor burning due to dry conditions.
County Executive Mike Breslin issued the directive Sunday, banning outdoor fires and trash burning after a serious brush fire in Rensselaerville on Thursday.
Breslin declared the state of emergency because a lack of rain has boosted the risks associated with burning brush and other debris. He said residents shouldn’t start any fires outdoors, including those in burn barrels and outdoor fireplaces.
The order is effective through Wednesday, but may be extended if the forecast continues to call for dry conditions. People who intentionally set outdoor fires could face misdemeanor charges and fines, Breslin said.
Schoharie County issued a similar ban on Thursday.
