Parents will now be able to access their children’s school information — including grades and attendance records — with the click of a mouse.

The Schenectady City School District on Tuesday launched Home Access Center, an online service that allows parents to access their child’s schedule, attendance record, class work, report card, discipline referrals and teacher contact information.

The feature can be accessed through the school district’s Web site.

Parents or guardians must register in person at their children’s school to access the records. The parent will receive a user name and password.

Lawrence M. Murphy Jr., chief technology officer for the district, said officials want parents to be pro-active in their children’s education.

“We wanted to build the communications between parents and teachers about the progress of their students,” he said.

Murphy said he hopes the district will get a response from about 40 percent of parents.

Murphy said this software allows parents to stay on top of things and not be surprised. He likes being able to check on his son. For example, he saw that his son had been late to his seventh-period class and he asked him why later that day.

“From a student point of view, I think they realize that Big Brother is really looking at them now,” he said.

Home Access Center is a feature of Pentamation, the system the district currently uses.

Murphy said he would like to expand the program in the future to include information about transportation and school lunches.

“I think we’re just scratching the surface,” he said.
