MAAC, America East tournaments in conflict

Are there enough college basketball fans in the Capital Region to support two conference tournaments at the same time?

We will soon find out.

A month after the University at Albany announced that it will host the America East Conference men’s tournament for the first time March 6-8, 2009 at the 4,538-seat SEFCU Arena, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference named the Times Union Center, home court of defending conference tournament champion Siena College, as the revised site for its men’s and women’s basketball tournament March 5-9, 2009. The Times Union Center will also host the MAAC Basketball Championship in 2010.

Next season’s MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship was originally scheduled for Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., but that site had economic issues with hosting the event and asked that another site be named. The Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn., will host the tournament in 2011.
