Reading and Romans
I have the nicest memories of my father. He had a great sense of humor and was always fun to be around.
Every Friday was new book day. He worked in New York City and came home to Jersey City every day, of course, but Friday he would bring a new book for both my sister and I, and after supper was over, we would dash to the couch for reading time!
After we both learned to read, he would leave us each a poem, based on the previous day’s activities. He dashed them off and tucked them into a mitten, our boot or shoe; someplace we would be sure to find them before school. The day after I started learning Roman numerals came this rhyme:
My Fab Father
“O, those Roman numerals
Surely get me down
I think they are the hardest
of anything in town.
I’d rather play tiddlywinks
it’s easier on the brain
So toss them to the Romans
or drown them in the rain!”
We lived in Schenectady by this time and went to Elmer Avenue School, which we loved.
