Schenectady County Community College President Gabriel Basil has confirmed this afternoon that he will retire after 17 years.

In a news release issued by the college, Basil said the timing of his decision to retire was important.

“The academic year 2008-2009 is an ideal time for transition to a new president considering the opportunities of the recently completed Culinary Arts Wing and the approved music addition to the Begley Building, potential enrollment growth and new opportunities via student housing,” he said.

Basil, 67, became college president in 1991 after serving as academic dean from 1982-1987 and vice president from 1987-1991, and will step down Dec. 1. he is the longest-serving president and school history and has the longest tenure of any of the current heads of Capital Region colleges and universities.
