The village of Fultonville will help about 20 property owners make improvements to their homes with a $374,000 grant from the Housing Trust Fund Corporation.

The latest grant adds to several others in the past four years amounting to $1.17 million in housing rehabilitation money provided to residents.

Housing work so far includes roof replacement, new boilers and water heaters, windows, doors and other improvements homeowners realize they need but are unable to afford.

“It’s trying to make the quality of life better,” Village Mayor Robert Headwell said.

Senior citizen Anna Suits was able to get the roof on her Montgomery Street home patched. Contractors also insulated her basement floor, among other things.

“To get all this done, I appreciate it,” said Suits, a village resident for 52 years.

Suits said she’s noticed an improved appearance of the housing in the tiny village, with dozens of homes getting new roofs or siding or windows.

Homeowner Bonnie Bohacek got new siding, a roof and new windows through a prior grant — work that she knew she needed since she purchased her home five years ago.

“I still wouldn’t have [done the work] without the grant,” Bohacek said.

Bohacek said contractors performed a safety inspection at her home as well and added ground fault circuit interrupters in the bathroom and kitchen.

“They did wonderful,” Bohacek said.

Contractors also check the homes for lead paint as part of the safety inspection, Headwell said.

Grants through the program range between $15,000 and $20,000, Headwell said, but smaller projects can be performed, depending on the number of applicants.

People who get the work done have to agree to stay in the home for five years or pay the money back on a sliding scale depending on how many years go by after the work, Headwell said.

Housing rehabilitation is one of several projects under way or being planned in the village.

Officials are planning a $200,000 Main Street facade program, and the village recently received $135,000 for a scenic river overlook with floating docks.

Another $600,000 will go for sidewalk improvements along River Street, and the village is developing a strategic plan with a $15,000 grant.

Applications for the housing rehabilitation grant can be obtained at Fultonville Village Hall at 10 Erie St.
