Only one Roman Catholic priest will serve the parishes of Assumption/St. Paul in Mechanicville and St. Peter’s in Stillwater, according to the Rev. Jim Kane, administrator at St. Peter’s.
That will be down from three earlier this year, before the associate pastor in Mechanicville, the Rev. Edward Dixey, was transferred away.
There is a shortage of Catholic priests in the Albany Diocese and throughout the United States.
Kane said it is not yet decided whether he will be the local priest or whether it will be the Rev. Keith Hollis, pastor at Assumption/St. Paul.
Hollis could not be reached for comment.
Kane said the daily Mass schedule is being changed, with masses only being held regularly at St. Peter’s on weekends and Monday evenings. Tuesday through Friday mornings, the daily Mass will be at the William Street church in Mechanicville. That was formerly the Church of the Assumption, and is located west of the closed Catholic school, which is west of the parish’s main church on North Main Street.
