Gasoline companies would face fines up to $10,000 for establishing price zones based on demographics under legislation expected to pass the Legislature.
Mark Hansen, a spokesman for the Senate’s Republican majority, said lawmakers were set to give final legislative approval today. The Assembly passed the measure 140-4 in June.
With zone pricing, wholesale prices are higher for retailers in more affluent areas. The sponsors’ memo says that means higher pump prices for individuals “who are assumed to be able to pay more.”
The measure would take effect 60 days after the governor signs the bill into law and authorize the attorney general to make emergency rules to implement it.
