KeyBank has chosen a 23-year Citibank veteran to take over its Northeast region and possibly expand it into New Jersey.

The Cleveland-based KeyBank Wednesday named Hugh Donlon as the president of its Northeast region, which covers Maine, Vermont, New York and Florida and includes 312 branches. He succeeds Thomas Geisel, who left the bank after overseeing the Northeast region for two years to head New Jersey’s third-largest commercial bank, Sun Bancorp.

Donlon most recently served as managing director of U.S. business banking for Citibank. He also managed its world headquarters in New York and led its branch expansion into New Jersey.

From KeyBank’s regional headquarters in downtown Albany, Donlon might set the bank on a Jersey-bound course similar to the one his predecessor took. KeyBank three years ago opened a commercial banking office in Parsippany, N.J. , a usual step banks take prior to moving into new markets with branches.

“That’s a high interest for us,” KeyBank spokeswoman Therese Myers said of the greater New York metropolitan area.

KeyBank last year strengthened its position in the Hudson Valley/Metro New York district by acquiring the Orangeburg-based Union State Bank and its 31 branches. Union’s offices were in Rockland, Westchester and Orange counties plus Fairfield County in Connecticut. They added to the 32 branches KeyBank had in the Hudson Valley.
