An audit by the county comptroller has found that several thousand dollars are missing from the evidence safe in the office of District Attorney P. David Soares.

Michael F. Conners said he performed an audit of the use of criminal forfeiture money by Soares’ office and found between $5,000 and $7,000 was missing from the safe. Conners will hold a press conference this afternoon to discuss his findings.

Soares could not be reached this morning.

In July, Conners, a Democrat, issued a highly critical audit of how Soares’ office handled its petty cash fund. By statute, the petty cash fund is only allowed to have $5,000 in it, but the audit found the account had a total of $351,000 after money was deposited there that was intended to be used for restitution to victims in a criminal case.

Soares is running for re-election against Roger Cusick, a Republican running on the Integrity Party line.
