Quarterback Dan Peters passed for three touchdowns and ran for another two, and Niskayuna weathered some anxious moments in the closing second to edge Shenendehowa, 34-28, tonight in their Class AA quarterfinal football game at Shenendehowa.
Peters hooked up with Kadeem Miller for touchdown passes of 16, 17 and 13 yards to lift Niskayuna to a 21-13 halftime lead. The Silver Warriors scored first and never trailed, and a missed extra point left the Plainsmen behind, 14-13 with 3:40 left in the half. Niskayuna went on an 80-yard scoring march to pad its lead, and an interception by Miller ended Shenendehowa’s last drive of the half.
The Plainsmen got untracked after the intermission and tied the score, 21-21, on Greene’s five-yard run and a conversion pass from Andrew Kalish to Mike Daly, but Peters got loose for a pair of 43-yard touchdown runs to give the Silver Warriors a 34-21 advantage.
Shenendehowa wasn’t done, though, closing the gap on Daly’s five-yard run in the fourth quarter. On their final drive, the Plainsmen got new life with a pass interference penalty in the end zone with 13 seconds left, but the ensuing three plays resulted in incomplete passes, enabling Niskayuna to hold on.
Niskayuna plays at Schenectady next Friday night in the semifinals.
