Princetown voters elected Republican Carol McClaine to serve out the remaining year on Cathy Hasbrouk’s term as town clerk.

McClaine soundly topped former town Assessor Kathy Nilsen by a vote of 553-440, according to unofficial results from the Schenectady County Board of Elections. McClaine, a former Town Board member, will retain the position she was appointed to in January following Hasbrouk’s retirement last year.

The election was somewhat of an anomaly in Princetown, considering town officials couldn’t recall the last time there was a contested race for the clerk’s position. McClaine needs to run again next year, after serving out the remainder of Hasbrouk’s four-year term.

The clerk’s position is normally a four-year term and pays $29,111 annually. Princetown’s proposed 2009 budget includes a 3 percent increase in the salary, bringing it to $29,882 per year.
