State corrections officials plan to consolidate housing units at 15 prisons, merge two infirmaries and close farms at a dozen prisons to save $8.7 million.

The Department of Correctional Services says it anticipates cutting 134 jobs for correction officers, mostly by eliminating vacant jobs but also cutting 44 through attrition. The agency says the prison population has declined to 61,032. There are another 748 inmates at the Willard Drug Treatment Campus.

Gov. David Paterson ordered budget cuts at agencies to reduce deficits. The vegetable, beef and dairy farms help supply prison food and employ 39 guards, 41 civilians and 188 inmates.
