State parks officials are developing donor networks to help New York’s 178 parks and 35 historic sites fund capital projects in the face of economic trouble and limited state spending.
Lucy Rockefeller Waletzky, a philanthropist who heads the advisory State Council of Parks, says the group plans to raise $30 million over five years.
While many parks already have “friends” groups, Waletzky says she is working through a network of 88 unpaid regional parks commission members to advocate for particular parks and raise funds.
This year, $75.5 million from state bonds is paying to fix park structures, some considered health and safety hazards.
