Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that routed an elderly couple from their home on Hickory Hill Road this morning.
About 50 firefighters responded to the 6:21 a.m. call. Mohawk Fire Chief Adam Schwabrow said flames were pouring out of the garage of the one-story home when he arrived.
Both occupants of the home got out safely, but one firefighter was struck in the face with the nozzle of a fire hose and required stitches, Schwabrow said.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze enough to allow the homeowners to preserve some belongings, but Schwabrow said the home was left uninhabitable. The homeowners did not require assistance from the Red Cross, and Schwabrow said they were staying with family nearby.
