Schenectady County Community College has selected Quintin Bullock, currently a provost at Tidewater Community College in Virginia, to be its next president.
Trustee Denise Murphy McGraw, who served as chairwoman of the search committee, confirmed Tuesday that the college has hired Bullock. McGraw said there were three excellent finalists but said the Board of Trustees was impressed that Bullock essentially runs two campuses in his current position.
“He is a dynamic leader. I think the community is really going to be thrilled with it. Everywhere he’s gone, he’s taken the institution to the next level and that’s what we’re looking to do,” McGraw said.
Bullock’s appointment becomes effective on July 1, pending approval of the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York. He will receive an annual salary of $155,000. He replaces Gabriel Basil, who stepped down last month after 17 years.
SCCC has more than 5,000 students and offers 41 degree programs.
McGraw said Bullock has previous experience in New York running the Damon City Center of Monroe Community College. He also has experience running a culinary program at Tidewater.
McGraw added that she hopes Bullock will continue the growth of the college, including its efforts to begin construction this spring on a 213-room student housing project.
Bullock has a total of 17 years of experience in higher education administration. He has served as provost of the Norfolk and Virginia Beach campuses of Tidewater Community College.
While there he increased enrollment, established a program with Norfolk public schools and played a role in the accreditation of the college’s culinary arts program by the American Culinary Federation, according to a press release from Tidewater.
Before that position, he was director for the Center for Urban Educational Studies at Monroe Community College.
Bullock has also taught biology courses as an adjunct professor at Houston Community College, Monroe Community College and Tidewater Community College. Most recently, he was appointed as an adjunct professor in education by the graduate school at Old Dominion University.
Bullock earned both his bachelor’s degree in pre-med (biology/chemistry) and master’s degree in education (biology) from Prairie View A&M University. He also received a doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center Dental Branch and completed post-doctoral work at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Bullock said he was thrilled about joining the staff.
“Schenectady County Community College is well positioned to be a viable contributor to the county and surrounding communities that it proudly serves. I am excited about the college’s mission and its future and I look forward to assuming the role of president. As well, I am confident that SCCC will continue to serve as a strategic partner in connecting and nurturing relationships with current and prospective students, its employees, community partners and the workforce,” he said in a statement.
Bullock has received a number of awards including the 2007 Damiani Administrator Award, the 2005 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Award and the 2004 National Council on Black American Affairs Outstanding Leadership in the Community College System Award. He is active in the community serving on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Beach Chamber of Commerce, Virginia Beach Central Business District, Virginia Beach Forum and Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital.
Edward Baker, dean of continuing education, will continue to serve as interim president until Bullock’s arrival.
Bullock beat out two other finalists — Patricia Kay Adkins, provost of Columbus State Community College in Ohio and Gary Porter, academic vice president at Bergen Community College in Paramus, N.J.
