Mohonasen girls set sights on title

Mohonasen is hoping for a triple-threat celebration tonight when the Mighty Warriors host Colonie in a Suburban Council girls’ basketball game.

No. 1 on the list is senior night, as both Nicole Adach and Michelle Aviza will be honored in Mohonasen’s last regular-season home game.

Adach is also involved with the second part of the celebration, as she needs only six points to become just the second girl in program history to score 1,000 career points. Amanda Blackstone reached that plateau in 2002.

Finally, Mohonasen (11-2, 15-2) can clinch at least a tie for the Suburban Council South Division championship, the first girls’ title in program history, if the Mighty Warriors can defeat the Garnet Raiders.

“It will be a big night all around,” said first-year Mohonasen coach Paul Brosious, who was the coach at Schenectady Christian for many years before taking over the Mighty Warriors’ program.

Adach averages 12.9 points per game, and also leads the team in rebounding.

“She’s an amazing player. She does so many things that you don’t even realize it. She leads our team in scoring and rebounding, and she’s also a great passer. She sets up teammates for good shots. She’s also a very good defensive player. She does it all,” said Brosious.

Adach, a four-year starter, will play basketball at Division II St. Michael’s on an athletic scholarship next year. She was a Suburban Council all-star a year ago, and has finished among the top seven Suburban Council scorers for the last two seasons.

“But I can say the same thing about Michelle Aviza,” said Brosius. “The fact that they are both so unselfish is one of the big keys to our success this season We have a lot of players who can score on this team. That’s why we are so difficult to defend.”

Brosious said the Mighty Warriors usually play man-to-man defense, but they will mix things up when necessary.

“Colonie is a very tough team. They are one of the teams that we’ve lost to, and they have a lot of weapons,” said the coach. “Our players are very intelligent, though, and they can make quick adjustments.”

Brosious, whose Warriors have won 10 straight, said he didn’t make winning a league title his goal.

“We go into every game trying to win. We haven’t really thought about a league title. I didn’t think that far in advance,” he said. “We just want to try to win every game and get better every day. This just kind of happened.”

Colonie (7-6, 9-8) is paced by Tehresa Coles (11.3 ppg) and Sydnie Rosales (10 ppg).

In a Western Athletic Conference game Monday night, Irene Longworth scored 13 points, Heather Siklen contributed 11 and Hayley Schelling chipped in with 10 to lead Galway over Schoharie, 48-24.

Taylor Young’s 14 points helped Greenville defeat Berne-Knox-Westerlo, 49-45, in a non-league game.

Roger West netted 15 points as Albany tripped Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons, 62-36, in a Big 10 boys’ makeup game. The Golden Knights played without leading scorer Brian Hamor, who sat out with a strained calf.

John Villanueava led ND-BG (8-4, 11-6) with 10 points.

Matt Berthiaume (18), Joe Harder (15) and Mike HIlton (12) combined for 42 points as Waterford-Halfmoon bounced New Lebanon, 67-54, in a Central Hudson Valley League game.

The Fordians improved to 9-5 and 10-8.

Steven Brundage poured in 38 points as Schenectady Christian toped Sharon Springs, 64-56, in a Western Athletic Conference game.

In a non-league game, Kyle Callanan scored 21 points to lift Mt. Anthony (Vt.) over Hoosick Falls, 57-48.

Kevin McMahon topped the 13-4 Panthers with 17 points.
