Tierney McGlynn scored 15 points and eighth-grader Ailayia Demand scored 10 points as Watervliet beat Johnstown, 46-31, this afternoon for the Section II Class B championship for the Lady Cannoneers’ third consecutive sectional crown.

Johnstown, the Foothills Council champion, was aiming for its first sectional title since 2006, when it won the third of its Class B crowns in four years.

Casey Croucher grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Lady Bills and was one of three Johnstown players to score six points — the others were Gretchen Derwin and Kendra Cooper.

Trailing 22-13 with 2:14 remaining in the first half, Johnstown held Watervliet scoreless for more than 7 1/2 minutes, but could only come to within 22-17 when Derwin scored on a layup 4:23 into the third quarter. The Lady Bills never came that close again.

Demand scored back-to-back buckets for the Lady Cannoneers, the second one making it 26-17 with 1:56 remaining in the quarter.

Watervliet will next face Potsdam of Section X in the opening round of the state tournament on Wednesday back at HVCC.

Derwin and teammate Hillary Kollar were named to the All-Tournament team. They joined McGlynn and her teammate, Jen Gates, along with Mechanicville’s Danielle Manupella and Hudson Falls’ Brielle Bartlett.

This is Watervliet’s fourth sectional title since 2003. The Lady Cannoneers won the Section II Class CC and combined CC-C titles in 2008 and the Class B title in 2007. The Lady Cannoneers were state regional champs in 2007.
