For the first time in the 48-year history of the ECAC Hockey tournament, Yale has won the championship.
Sean Backman had the hat trick, and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player as he led the top-seeded Bulldogs to a 5-0 rout over Cornell on Saturday at the Times Union Center.
The Bulldogs, who won the regular-season title, earn an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. They will be playing in the East Regional in Bridgeport, Conn.. The 16-team field will be announced Sunday at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN2.
Cornell should receive an at-large bid.
