The Schenectady County Department of Motor Vehicles lost telephone service today and may not have it Tuesday, said spokesman Joe McQueen.
McQueen said a Verizon contractor on Friday severed a phone line serving the lower State Street area. The county DMV relies entirely on phones for its work and so had to shut down early Monday when service was not restored, he said.
“That is the only office we have and without the one line it cannot do anything,” McQueen said.
The county hoped Verizon would have fixed the problem by today, McQueen said. He said the county is not sure the problem will be fixed Tuesday either. “We are hesitant to say we will be open,” he said.
McQueen said people should call the county DMV before visiting. He said the office is closed if the phone rings continuously and does not go to voice mail.
