Siena College basketball coach Fran McCaffery, calling the school community “a very special home for me and my family,” has agreed to a six-year extension on his contract, which still has two years remaining. The deal has McCaffery signed through the 2016-17 season.

At a press conference at the school’s Alumni Recreation Center, McCaffery said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed my first four years at Siena and am very proud of all that we have accomplished. The continued support of the administratioin and Siena community has made this place a very special home for me and my family. I look forward to building upon our recent success, while continuing to develop young men of character who represent Siena’s mission and values in the most positive way possible.”

Siena Director of Athletics John D’Argenio said, “It was important that Siena show that it is committed to the basketball program and its head coach. What has been accomplished the past two seasons is unmatched in Siena’s rich basketball tradition. We look to continue moving forward and adding to that tradition.”

McCaffery has posted an 86-43 record in four seasons at Siena. In each of the past two seasons, the team has reached the second round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. This season, they defeated Ohio State in double overtime before bowing to Louisville.

McCaffery’s and Siena’s recent success has elevated the coach’s profile on the national coaching scene. Xavier University, whose coach recently left to take a position at the University of Arizona, is believed to be interested in McCaffery. Xavier competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference. McCaffery said today he has not been contacted by any other schools, however.

McCaffery receives between $350,000 and $400,000 per year under his current contract. The extension gives McCaffery a raise, but details were not disclosed.
