Federal authorities are investigating after local police found what they call anti-government material in the home of a city man arrested Thursday for allegedly possessing a live hand grenade.
Authorities charged Daniel Day, 22, of 14A Kirby Road, after midnight Thursday after a six-hour manhunt.
They found him hiding in a shed in Milton on a family member’s property, said Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy III.
He is in the Saratoga County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bail or $30,000 bond.
Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested Day in connection with a hand grenade found in his home during a domestic incident Wednesday morning.
He was charged with felony third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal mischief, both misdemeanors.
Murphy would not comment on the federal investigation, and an assistant in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Syracuse said the office does not comment on or confirm ongoing investigations.
“I can tell you it’s of an anti-government vein,” Murphy said.
City police spokesman Lt. Gregory Veitch said he could not disclose anything found in the home.
“The matter is still under investigation, and additional charges may be possible,” he said.
Day was arraigned in Malta Town Court Thursday morning after Saratoga Springs City Court Judge Jeffrey Wait recused himself from the case. No reason was given for Wait’s recusal.
Authorities said officers found the grenade and between eight and 10 rifles and shotguns when they responded to a domestic incident at Day’s home shortly after 5 a.m. Wednesday.
Day did not need a permit to keep the rifles and shotguns, Murphy said, so he was not charged in connection with having those weapons. But police did seize them.
“They had posed a danger in his residence when he was at liberty and evading the police,” Murphy said.
The weapons were not used during the domestic incident, although a woman was treated and released from Saratoga Hospital for injuries suffered, authorities said.
Day was the suspect in the domestic incident but wasn’t at the home by the time officers got there, police said.
The state police bomb squad removed the grenade and determined that it contained some explosive material.
The occupants of an adjoining apartment were evacuated until state police secured the scene.
