Fall Arts Best Bets: VISUAL ARTS

The fall season kicks off with intriguing group exhibits in Albany. At the University Art Museum, it’s “Uncharted,”“ an exploration of travel and discovery, another salute to the Hudson River Quadricentennial. At Albany Center Gallery,“ “Assiduity”“ takes a different tack on the Hudson theme, honoring Albany artists whose combined output equals 400 years.

On Sept. 27, ““Poet of the Ordinary,”“ a retrospective of 78 works by East Texas photographer Keith Carter, opens at the Esther Massry Gallery at the College of Saint Rose.

In October, the must-see exhibit is ““Re-imagining the Distaff Tool Kit,”“ 33 contemporary artists who re-configure the tools of domestic life once used by women, in the Mandeville Gallery at Union College’s Nott Memorial.

Best Bets Summer 2012

““Niagara,”“ an 1878 painting by William Morris Hunt at the Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown, Mass., is the centerpiece of four October exhibits about the artist and New York’s famous falls.

On Nov. 1, the Opalka Gallery at The Sage Colleges of Albany unveils“ “Some Women,”“ a 35-year survey of photographs by the award-winning Dona Ann McAdams, whose images of American life have been compared to Dorothea Lange’s.

On Nov. 15, at the Arkell Museum, it’s“ “Games, Gizmos and Toys in the Attic,”“ photographs and models that Walter Wick uses in his popular “I Spy” children’s books. The exhibit travels to Canajoharie from the New Britain Museum of American Art.
