Derrick Pitts ran for two touchdowns and passed for two, and Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons opened its Class D schedule Saturday with a 36-18 victory over Saratoga Catholic.

The Golden Knights built a 14-0 first-quarter lead and led at the half, 30-6, en route to their second win after knocking off Class C foe Tamarac a week ago.

“We talked about getting off to a good start,” said Pitts, who ran for 207 yards on 16 carres. “We got it rolling and kept on hammering.”

Pitts threw scoring passes to Richie Homenick and Robert Redman, with Redman also kicking a field goal and three extra points as part of the Golden Knights big first half. Jonathan Villanueva added a 56-yard touchdown run in the opening half, part of his nine-carry, 86-yard performance.

“Last year, everyone keyed on Derrick. This year, we have more guys teams have to key on,” said Villanueva said. “We spread it around pretty good.”

Dale Long returned an interception 80 yards for the Saints (0-2) lone first-half touchdown, and Jeremy Furey and Dave Mulcahy cracked the end zone in the second half.

“Our kids hung in there and played hard right until the end,” said Saints coach Phonsey Lambert. “In the second half, we did some good things. We just got beat by a better, more athletic, team.”

Saints quarterback Dylan Anderson was 8-for-11 passing for 116 yards, and Furey had 60 rushing yards on nine carries. Mulcahy and Jack Keller both caught three passes for a combined 89 yards, and the pair totaled 19 tackles.

“We had a couple of penalties that cost us, and we gave up some touchdowns after we built our lead,” said first-year Golden Knights coach Tom Pallas. “We can’t afford to do those things when we meet some of top teams in the league, but all in all, I’m happy with the win.”
