Strong senior leadership is one of the main reasons why Scotia-Glenville has been able to put together an impressive seven-game winning streak that includes several dominating performances.

Tartans coach Jim Giammattei says seniors Mike Davenport and Tyler Ackley do all the things that don’t show up in the scorebook, and he expects more of the same when Scotia-Glenville takes on Foothills Council rival Gloversville tonight at Scotia.

“We are playing well lately. We’ve overcome a lot of little problems and adversity,” said Giammattei. “We are sharing the basketball, and everyone understands their role on this team. It all starts with Mike and Tyler. They set the tone, and exemplify what team play is all about. They will do whatever we need them to do. They do a lot of the dirty work for us, and they are both very unselfish. It might be different things on different nights that we ask them to do. They do the things that go unnoticed by the public or the media, but we coaches understand how important their contributions are to the success of this team.”

The 5-2, 9-2 Tartans haven’t lost since a 79-70 setback to Queensbury on Dec. 17. Most of their wins have been routs. Giammattei said that his unselfish club is learning the secrets of how to win.

“Terell Winney is Terell Winney. You know what you’re going to get out of him,” said Giammattei of the Tartans’ scoring ace. “He’s a strong player. But our three sophomores, Chris Zanta, Matt Renko and Casey Norton, have been more than what we could have asked for. They are coming along, and their understanding of what their roles are has really improved.”

Winney is third in the Section II scoring race at 22 points per game. Ackley scores just under 10 ppg, while Norton and Davenport score between 8 ppg and 9 ppg.

Although the Tartans have been beating up on their opponents for the last month, Giammattei expects a strong showing from the 4-3, 6-5 Dragons.

“When you’re talking about a Scotia-Gloversville game, all bets are off,” he said. “You’ve got to throw all the stats out. How many years have the schools been playing this game? This is always a good one.”

The Dragons are led by 5-10 senior guard Malcolm Mathias, who scores 17.6 ppg, but they are also getting solid production from Aaron Hall (12.2 ppg).

“Mathias is having a great senior year for them, and they must be thrilled to see what Hall is giving them. I’m sure they had a couple of question marks before the season, but they are having a great year, and [Chad] McCloskey is a good, solid leader. He brings that leadership and football mentality to the court. They’ve also got a three-year starter in Chris LeFever. They’ve got three starters back, and Hall has done a great job of stepping in. They have more experience than we do.

“My feeling is that Gloversville will want to push the pace. They play fast, because Mathias and Hall like to play fast. We expect the pace to be fast in this game.”
