Family Court Judge Jo Anne Assini announced today she will not seek reelection to a second 10-year term this year.
Assini was unclear as to her future plans after she leaves the bench. “For the past nine years, I had the honor of serving the people of Schenectady as one of their two Family Court judges. But during that time, I have come to realize that, at heart, I am an advocate, not a bystander, and one cannot do that as a judge. It is time to be true to myself, and so I will not be seeking another term this fall,” she said.
Assini defeated Raymond E. DeMatteo Jr. in a Democratic primary in 2000 to face Republican Kathleen R. DeCataldo for the seat that year. She later defeated DeCataldo by approximately 5,000 votes. DeMatteo ran as a Conservative Party candidate.
Prior to her election, Assini worked as a child sex-crimes prosecutor in the office of Schenectady County District Attorney.
