Union freshman defenseman Greg Coburn will most likely miss the rest of the regular season, and maybe the postseason, after suffering a lower-body injury during practice Tuesday.
Coburn got tangled up with forward Jason Shaffer, according to Union coach Nate Leaman, and injured his left leg.
“They both lost balance, and fell,” Leaman said. “Jason kind of fell on Greg’s leg as he was going down. It was kind of an awkward thing.”
Coburn’s will have an MRI today to determine the nature of the injury and how much time he will miss.
“The leg was spasming up,” Leaman said. “We’re not sure if he’s torn muscles around his hip, or if he just dislocated his hip or torn his hip flexor. It could be something different, to be honest.”
Coburn was having a solid season. He has two goals and 14 assists in 29 games, tying him for seventh in overall scoring among ECAC Hockey defensemen. In league play, he is tied for seventh in defensemen scoring with a goal and 10 assists.
The injury comes at a time when 16th-ranked Union (10-4-4 ECACH, 16-8-6 overall) is trying to secure a first-round bye in the ECACH tournament. The Dutchmen entered Tuesday tied with Cornell for second place. Cornell played Colgate on Tuesday.
Union has four games remaining, with Princeton and Quinnipiac coming to Messa Rink this weekend, and contests at Cornell and Colgate to close out the season next weekend.
“It’s obviously tough because Greg brings so much to the table,” Leaman said. “He’s not only a very good puck-moving defenseman, but he’s also a very good quarterback of a power play. And he brings a lot to the team off of the ice, as well.
“[Injuries are] a part of the game, unfortunately. Every team goes through this. While Greg’s out, the rest of us need to pick it up and fill the void.”
