A legislative leader who met privately with New York Gov. David Paterson and a colleague says they never discussed whether the embattled governor should resign.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said after today’s meeting at the governor’s mansion that he does not believe Paterson should step down.

He says the topic never came up in the hourlong meeting also attended by Senate Conference Leader John Sampson.

He wouldn’t say what the meeting was about, but such gatherings are not uncommon during budget negotiations. Sampson wouldn’t comment to reporters.

The National Organization for Women and some politicians want the governor to step down because of contacts he and members of his administration had with a woman who accused a top Paterson aide of domestic violence.
