Brown shocks RPI, 3-1

Goals by Jarred Smith and Bobby Farnham just over a minute apart early in the third period lifted Brown to a 3-1 victory over RPI in Game 1 of their ECAC Hockey tournament first-round series Friday at Houston Field House.

The Bears take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. They can clinch the series with a win Saturday.

Smith scored 1:40 into the third, tying the score at 1-1. Then, 1:13 later, Farnham put in the rebound of a Devin Timberlake shot past goalie Allen York, whose misplay trying to clear the puck.

Aaron Volpatti added an empty-net goal with 1:05 left.

Paul Kerins scored a first-period power-play goal for the Engineers.
