Authorities hope that sometime today they will be able to identify the human remains found Sunday off a bike trail in town.

Saratoga County Coroner John DeMartino said an autopsy was performed Monday afternoon, but no identification had been made, not even whether the bones were from a male or female.

He said there is a possibility that the death could be a suicide. A weapon was found at the scene, DeMartino said. He would not elaborate.

“Dental records will be used for the identification,” he said. “There was some clothing at the scene, but the remains were just bones.”

Saratoga County Sheriff’s Investigator Herb Hall said the remains were discovered at about 4 p.m. on Sunday by hikers. The area where the skeletal remains were found is heavily wooded. Railroad tracks also run through the general vicinity.

He would not comment on their condition or estimate how long they were in the area, located off the bike trail between Outlet Road and Connolly Road.

Sheriff’s patrol cars were parked at the entrances to the path on both roads all day Monday and civilians were turned away as officers checked the area.

Saratoga County District Attorney James A. Murphy III said late Monday afternoon that his office has not been briefed on the case by the Sheriff’s Department.

“I suspect that it’s uncertain whether or not any criminal conduct was present,” Murphy said.

“The Sheriff’s Department is investigating it,” Murphy said.
