A day after Senate Democrats were harshly criticized for offering labor leaders insider access in exchange for $50,000 campaign contributions, the Democrats expanded the offer.

The Buffalo News reports today that the Senate Democrats will now also offer the special access to those lobbying for legislation and state taxpayer money for the environment, women’s issues, lawyers and for the gay and lesbian community.

The New York Public Interest Research Group has called the practice one of the most brazen pay-to-play schemes ever seen in Albany. NYPIRG’s Blair Horner said that even if it the practice is legal, it stinks.

The practice would have been banned under Gov. David Paterson’s ethics bill, which was rejected this year by the Senate and Assembly.
