A Montgomery County man died Tuesday after being struck by a tree at a logging site.

Brian A. Johnson, 39, of St. Johnsville, was in a wooded area off Marshville Road in Canajoharie when a piece of logging equipment nearby hit a diseased, standing tree. The tree then toppled onto Johnson, according to state police.

Police said Wilson Mason, 54, of Palatine Bridge, was dragging a log out of the woods with a skidder and only learned his brother Robbie Mason and his friend Johnson had stopped by the work site when he turned to witness the falling tree hit Johnson.

Trooper Lisa MacLauchlin, called to the scene around 12:45 p.m., started CPR and Mid-County Ambulance arrived not long afterward. Johnson was flown to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown by LifeNet and he was pronounced dead by Otsego County Coroner James Dow at 3:40 p.m.
