UPDATE: Moyston Street home damaged by fire

A fire this morning on Moyston Street severely damaged a home.

Firefighters were called to 19 Moyston St. just after 9 a.m. for a fire on the second floor. They arrived to find the second floor ablaze. At one point, a thick column of black smoke billowed from the home, visable from nearby State Street.

Firefighters appeared to quickly knock down the fire. Officials were not immediately available. State Street was closed at Moyston Street. A hose blocked the street, leading to a hydrant on the opposite side.

At least one woman lived in the home, neighbors said. She was reported to be out of the house and on the scene.

Neighbor Ernestine Gooden said she heard what appeared to be smoke detectors going off from next door. When they went out to investigate, they saw the neighbor’s home on fire.

She spoke as firefighters ensured the blaze was out, and before she knew whether her home sustained damage.

“We didn’t know if we would have our home to sleep in,” Gooden said of first seeing the blaze. “We didn’t know where we were going to live.

“By God’s blessing … we’re saved. God saved us,” she said.

Another neighbor, Anthony Hoose, was also home at the time. He saw others outside and went out himself, seeing the fire. He made sure everyone was out of his apartment. He said he feared smoke got in. One of his children, who was not home at the time, has asthma, he said.
