One man was shot in the leg Wednesday following a fight on Park Avenue in the city’s latest outburst of violence.
Police were kept busy all evening following a string of incidents that began at 8:23 p.m. with a report of shots fired on Park Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a 25-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his left leg just above his knee. The victim, whom police did not identify, was transported to Ellis Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police spokesman Sgt. Luciano Savoia.
The suspect fled in burgundy sport utility vehicle, last seen traveling north on Park Avenue, police said. Police have no suspects in custody and the investigation is ongoing.
Officers recovered two shell casings in the middle of the road.
Neighbor Anupam Gopal said he saw a two men fighting and a van with people getting in and out. “I heard some pops and I called 911,” he said.
Another neighbor who did not wish to give his name said the fight involved about a dozen people.
Resident Jonathan Covey said the neighborhood, which is near Union College, is going downhill. One of his friends got stabbed and mugged recently, he said. “We’re looking at moving,” he said.
Later at around 9:20 p.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired and people outside yelling and screaming in the vicinity of 779 Albany St. Schenectady County sheriff’s deputies were called in to assist local police, according to police radio transmissions.
No further information was available from police about that shooting and whether it was related to the earlier incident.
