Top Senate Republican aide and strategist John McArdle is retiring just as the GOP hopes to regain the majority in the chamber.
McArdle has risen through the ranks of the Senate’s Republican conference during his 29-year career, spending the last two decades as one its most influential staffers.
His was director of communications for former Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno and current GOP leader Dean Skelos.
An ongoing recount of the Nov. 2 election will determine which party controls the Senate.
McArdle is 55 years old and lives in Albany County. His retirement was announced today.
The state ethics law will bar him from lobbying the Legislature for two years, but he could begin political consulting immediately.
