State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says not only does New York have the highest taxes in the nation, but it has far more tax assessors than other states.
He says local governments could save their taxpayers $12.5 million a year if they stopped having village, town, city and county assessors evaluating the same property for their different taxes.
DiNapoli’s report released today says New York has one of the most complex property tax systems in the nation.
The New York Conference of Mayors declined comment.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is urging local governments to consolidate services, which could include tax assessing.
