Olender Mattress Co. is closing after 33 years of business on lower State Street and 109 years in the Capital Region, with the owner citing economic factors as the reason.
Richard Olender, the fourth-generation owner and operator of the specialty mattress store, said the recession has hurt the home furnishing business to the point where people are more interested in “putting food on their tables and gas in their cars,” rather than spending money on a high-end mattress.
Charles Steiner, president of the Chamber of Schenectay County, said he was sad to see the loss of a prominent business in the community. He also said the loss may be shortlived because of the pending redevelopment of Erie Boulevard and proposed redevelopment of lower State Street toward Schenectady County Community College.
