The Memorial Day weekend was a busy one for hotels across New York state, and many in the lodging business say they think that’s a sign of good things to come this summer.

The New York State Hospitality and Tourism Association says its survey of nearly 1,300 member businesses and individuals in the lodging and attractions industry found that 73 percent of respondents said occupancy last weekend was better than or as good as the same weekend last year.

The trade group says Memorial Day weekend business is a good indicator for how busy hotels will be during the summer travel season. Some 72 percent of the hoteliers surveyed said they believe summer business will improve this year over 2010, and 81 percent of hoteliers didn’t think high gas prices had a negative impact on business.
