Transportation officials from Vermont and New York are studying the possibility of adding passenger rail service to parts of southwestern Vermont and adjacent areas of New York.
The two states are using a grant from the Federal Railroad Administration to look for the best route to add rail service between western Vermont communities without passenger service such as Bennington and Manchester and Albany and Saratoga Springs.
Carl Fowler, a member of the Vermont Rail Advisory Council, says the study is a complete redesign of the rail infrastructure of western Vermont.
Costa Pappis of the Vermont Transportation Agency tells Vermont Public Radio that if a route can be selected by the end of 2012 and funding can be found, a new line could be ready within five years.
