A ninth-grade teacher who was instrumental in restructuring the ninth grade at Schenectady High School has been named Teacher of the Year.

Susie Walsh, who teaches English in the Edison School of Math, Science and Technology, was taken by surprise when a host of visitors tromped into her classroom Thursday morning.

She was struggling to fix an overheated computer in the sweltering room.

As she was handed flowers and balloons, her first comment was, “This is a little embarrassing.”

She then tried to shoo everyone out so she could continue her lesson. It is, after all, nearly time for final exams, and her students were refining their essay-writing techniques.

But the honor soon sunk in and she said jokingly that she wanted more than just flowers.

“I’d like an air conditioner. A fan more than two inches wide. A computer that doesn’t crash when it’s too hot,” she said.

She also insisted that her entire team of teachers deserved the award.

“This isn’t just me. I have a team behind me,” she said.
