The ALCO Historical & Technical Society (AHTS) announced this morning that the American Locomotive Company Heritage Museum will be located on Maxon Road Extension.
The museum on June 1 began moving artifacts into an 18,000-square-foot building at 1910 Maxon Road Extension.
Initially, the planned major showpieces of the museum will be two electric locomotives built by ALCO and GE in Schenectady during the early years of the 20th Century for the New York Central Railroad and a steam locomotive built by ALCO in the latter part of 1946, according to a press release.
In addition to a number of other steam and diesel locomotives, several World War II and Korean War era Army tanks will also find a home at the museum. A grand opening is planned for spring 2012.
The 60-acre former Alco site is currently being demolished for The Galesi Group’s proposed $200 million mixed use project that will feature condominiums and a marina along 1.5 miles of Mohawk River waterfront, retail shops, commercial offices and possibly a hotel.
