A 15-year-old resident at the Tryon Girls Center was charged with third-degree assault, a class A misdemeanor, Monday after a reported fight with another 15-year-old resident.
State police at Mayfield responded to a call at 3:56 p.m. Monday regarding a fight in the Tryon cafeteria, said Trooper Maureen Tuffey, the public information officer for state police Troop G.
“They were just slugging it out,” she said. “I think one girl did much better than the other one.”
Staff separated the girls, but more residents joined the fight at this point, Tuffey said. The girl charged with assault was uninjured, while the other suffered a cut to her left eye and swelling and was treated at Tryon’s nursing facility.
The girls’ names were not be released because of their ages.
Monday’s incident is one of “probably a half-dozen” over the last three months, Tuffey said. The most recent occurred June 8, when a 17-year-old Tryon resident allegedly stabbed a male staff member in the face and left wrist with a pencil.
“This stuff goes on there all the time,” Tuffey said. “You’ve got a bunch of 14-, 15-, 16-year-old girls who are pretty combative.”
The center, located on County Highway 107, will permanently close by Aug. 31, along with three other state juvenile detention facilities, after an announcement by Gov. Andrew Cuomo earlier this month.
